Everyone is doing their end of year reviews. Top ten best albums/ singles.
Honestly who gives a shit, I heard nothing this year that is as good as Surfer Rosa or even Bossanova so there really is no need for top 5's let alone top tens. Seen some great live stuff though.
Top 3 I like Keith TOTP's album, I love Rebekah's new stuff and the Black Daniel album Let's get sued is great too. This year I have mainly been getting into old stuff that I didn't know about, Bauhaus and even Leonard Cohen.
I have really enjoyed playing in so many different projects this year, Black Daniel, Heart Kill Giant, Subliminal Girls, The 18 Carat Love Affair, the Inevitable Pin Hole Burns,Mayumi Carrex with Wayne and Ciaran, The Angry Bees, Duos and trios and solos.
It has been the year of amazing new friends, and amazing times with old friends. A few sad times and lots of happy times, none of which I regret. I go into 2011 with a head full of ideas and inspirations and a lack of fear not experienced since my teens. So I am 34. 34 is a good f**king age, I know a darn sight more now than I did when I was 26. I wish I could go back in time and have a few words with that f**king idiot back then.
Massive thanks to Liam Black Daniel for sticking his neck out for the pinholes, to Patrick Mccourt for asking me to play the bass for him, Wayne for wanting to get a band back together, the pinholes for asking me to sing for them and always showing up on time. Sub Girls for always being the same and Arran, for, well, just being Arran and constantly putting up with my shit. Steve Horry, Kate Dornan, Ciaran McNamee, Keith TOTP, Holly, Dan Pallett for sitting opposite me everyday and listening to my shit and everyone else ( you know who you all are you aren't named but you are not forgotten). Come on 2011.
Works great, music is better than ever, the window is open, it isn't even that cold and I have the best friends in the world.
If you want to know about the rest of the year see below. I would also like to thank the government for banning mephadrone. That stuff was the work of the fucking devil.

Chrome wheeled fuel injected and stepping out over the line......
Evening chaps, it is Sunday night and this week I am mostly going to a desert where there is no music or arts culture what so ever to rest my tired head and body after the last few weeks hecticity.
Really enjoyed playing the first Mayumi Carrex gig with the fades at the urban bar which seems to be situated just on the edge of hell. really good for a first gig. I love playing nasty aggressive bass guitar and I was certainly given the chance to do that, next gig is going to be on the 11th December at the Brixton Windmill for Les "Fruitbat" Carter's birthday. Seemed to drink my own body weight in weird imported lager courtesy of Viz the Spoon and pretty much wrote off the rest of the weekend. The fades we amazing as always, good to see Flash back in the frame too. I hope that they are having the time of their lives in New York this week.
Sunday however, I rehearsed for the first time with Patrick MCourt for his Heart Killed Giant project. This involved finding out that I also enjoy playing soft gentle bass guitar too. Rehearsed on Tuesday, warm up gig on Wednesday and finally the single launch itself on Thursday at the Ritzy Cinema in Brixton. Well, it was totally packed. Pats' voice is something very very special. I think that he is going to go some distance with this. The press seem to love it, XFM keep playing it and the songs, although a much more chilled out that what I am used to, really stick in your head. You could have heard a pin drop during Punch Drunk.
Check our more here http://heartkillgiant.bandcamp.com/album/the-heart-ep
The Inevitable Pinhole Burns have a load of stuff going on but I am not saying anything about it yet. Really enjoyed last nights early show at the buffalo bar, many thanks to A Secret Picnic for some great photos. Next gig is on the 26th of November, a Friday night, in Camden, at the Enterprise with.....Subliminal Girls. Yes I know we have already played our last gig....so what. We can play another few, we haven't seen each other for a while we still have some nice songs to sing and there is no way you could get all 5 of us in a room together unless we have a gig to play. Barbed Wire Kisses etc......
On Tuesday I am of up to Manchester to play guitar for Keith TOTP in support of one of my favourite bands in the world, The Blood Arm. Then I am of to the middle east to sit in the Indian Ocean with my nieces and nephew and get annoyed at their Mid Atlantic accents, they sound like mini Lyod Grossman's. ANd the reference and the top? I just love born to run.

Recording of the "working title" Red Bikini Set EP

Morning chaps,
Day two in the studio is about to start. Yesterday went really well, much better than any of us could have hoped. we can recommend the use of Black Daniel Bar and Grill studios highly. It was a strange experience experiencing studio time whilst a: not taking the piss out of each other so much all the fun was taken out of it and b:Not hating almost 90% of it. The lack of any visible signs nervous breakdowns from any band members was also helpful. Time of year I guess but still a novelty.
We managed to get 4 tracks down, 1275 (the stripper one), Gin (the dark one), Bhambi (the dreamy floaty one), and the nameless one (About everyone wanting to be Thurston Moore or Stevie Nicks). Just mixing to do today really.
I wish I could sleep. Too much salty Korean Food, but how amazing is Korean food! First time yesterday.
Naming an EP is not easy. I like "Red Bikini Set". It is a lyric from 1275.
I think we will have an album out by January at this rate.

Mayumi Carrex first Gig, Pinhole Burns Updates solo shows and ashes an ashes and second hand passions and stolen guitars

Hello all,
Things have been a little quite on the whole music blog thing the last few months due to various external factors but things now seem to be back on track. Quite a few things happening, I have seen next to no live music over the last few weeks. I caught the last 10 mins of the Indelicates on Friday night, saw Black Daniel the Sat before but both times I was pretty destroyed. I also watched the xfactor once. I will never do that again, I just wanted to see if I was wrong, or may be I wanted to be able to understand what the people at work were talking about, I wasn't wrong.
Anyway, Wayne, Jimmy 2 Shoes, Ciaran and I have been working for several months on a new project, Mayumi Carrex. We are going to perform live with it for the first time, we have 7 completed songs, mostly written by Wayne Rhesus. Jimmys voice is totally different to mine, I am playing bass and not singing at all on this. They are the kind of words that my situation has moulded into. We are playing on 5th November with the Fades in Whitechapel at Urban. (Never been there) but apparently good for a Friday night. Come and see us.
I am playing 3 songs from 1987-1991 with Zac Stephenson and Joe Fox at Bartock on the 3rd November.
This month I have purchased two beautiful guitars one day when I work out how to post pictures on here you will see some pictures. One is a 2002 Fender USA Texas Special Fat Strat, it has a scratchplate straight out of an Essex bathroom. The other is a one of custom build Heritage hollow body with Jason Lollar P90's and a 60's style bigsby unit.....asleep yet? Sorry.
Woke up at 5.30 this morning and couldn't get back to sleep so I set about writing the lyrics for a few songs that have been bubbling over. The last few weeks have been a bit weird so that has helped fuel the fire word wise. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and just generally been there. It never goes un-noticed.
We are going into the studio next week with Lamik 2000 from Black Daniel and we hope to get two tracks down to release on the Indelicates Corporate Recordings label over the next few weeks.
The tracks we have to play with are Bhambi a rambling song about being in a band (jesus that sounds f*cking cliche, there are no mandolins or ragamuffins, it isn't what you think), £12.75 (about a stripper I met but originally about something else), October (about a mish mash of things that have happened in October some good, most bad all confusing) and Gin (A tender love song about comedowns and broken glass). Not sure which ones we are going to go with. (I also haven't discussed this mail out, or any of the song titles with the rest of the band so these are subject to change)
We are playing at the George Tavern on Halloween(31st) too so next weekend is going to be quite busy.
The gig after that is guided missile. 13t November at the Buffalo Bar.
We really enjoyed playing at Proud for Zac last week, I think we may have slightly confused the crowd, the band before us were exactly the sort of PRS driven female fronted regional emo toss that seems to get on to most bills nowadays.
Please try harder bands, anyways. Have a nice sunday.

....feel good sh*t of this summer
Well summer has gone. And what a summer it was, a summer with almost no sunshine, except in June. I now am lying in bed with an awful cold. Was it a summer of great music, like the summer of 77 or 69 or 95 or 97 or indeed 2001 or the Primaveras of 2008 and 2009? NO. Festival wise, Secret Garden was great fun but really it was a bunch of Tarquins and Sophies in a field. Not really a music festival more a place for people to use the last of their miow miow and talk about their gap years.
Enjoyed spending time with the helmholtz and of course the black daniel crew. That was great fun. "Has anyone seen an American who looks like he has no business being in a tent?"
We decided to go to Paris for our festival this year. Rock On Seine, and ace it was too. Cypress Hill, QOTSA, 2 many djs, Roxy Music, Arcade Fire (the only 2010 ish band) we saw. You know what, in a sort of a bit too jangly but still very much passable melodicaly way, I really enjoyed what I saw of them before the rain came down and the French couldn't cope, and seeing as they couldn't run away, eat a garlic or buy a beret, they sent everyone home. We met some lovely people, drank lots of beer and really enjoyed ourselves. The Eels I loved last time but I wasn't massively keen on the old school rock and roll style this time. The Parisiennes however, were the single most unfriendly bunch of people I have ever come across. No matter what they say about London, if you speak to someone they will almost always speak back to you they may appear a bit stunned that you spoke to them but they will speak back. The Parisiennes look at you like you are one of the many poodle turds that line so many of their filthy le monde littered streets, then go back to listening to Phoenix. 18 of us then made a break for it in 4 cars for the south of france. Bergerac, a house and pool, stomach problems, amazing sunshine, great times and super holidays, canoeing and serious melon/ cured ham eating down at Club Le Grange.....videos to follow when I get the lead back. Role on next summer. Tom Banks, thank you for putting together such an awesome band of people.
This next part has little to do with music but warrants a mention. Danny, Dave, Walsh and I headed for Puerta Banus (Pueta Banus more like) for a short holiday. When discussing the plans for this we decided that for our holiday we wanted to go to 80's Miami. If anyone wants to go to 80's Miami, book yourself a flight to Malaga rent a convertable and a villa and head for Banus, you can't buy class, but you can buy almost everything else and Banus is the place they take it when they buy it. The whole town is like a working brothel, a theme park for prostitution, boats and well more prostitutes! It has to be seen to be believed, all it is missing is Jan Hammer and Miami Sound Machine, and drink plenty of Alhambra beer before you go out, it is 20euro for a beer in Banus's many poncy establishments. The devil does indeed live in Banus, it is, to plageurise Hunter S Thompson on Vegas " What the whole world would be doing if the Nazis had won the war". Go see it , amazing place! Time spent chiling out in Marbella and wandering the more ish Moorish streets of Granada was superb. Next year we are going back to Marbella. Spanish Bombs in Andalucia.
Music wise Subliminal Girls loved playing at Gracetonbury an annual festival to celebrate Grace Creedy. Thank you to Richy for standing in in place of Danny who was still not quite match fit. He is now however.
The first two department shows have been good. However I think that we may have to change the name. Department shows up on almost every commercial website in the world. Not good for SEO. We have a few ideas, I like The Inevitable Pin Hole Burns. Nice reference from track on the wall about Syd Barrett. It is a bit long but I like it.
We have loads more new songs to play. We are going into the studio with Lamik 2000 of the amazing Black Daniel to record over the next few weeks.
Arran and I have formed The Marksmen, a two piece band. That way we only have each other to moan about. Cuts down on moaning time.
Horry , Dornan and myself got together last night and played a few tunes but I was a bit ill. Steve will tell you more about our plans.
Wayne, Ciaran, two shoes and I have finally booked a gig 5th November, name TBC, names mooted include "The French Electric" , "Junior Hacksaw" and "Sauf Pompiers"
Here comes the Autumn, more colds, rain, wind etc all the way until next May, it has to be Primavera again next year. We have also just booked tickets to ATP to throw filthy magazines at Belle and Sebastian fans and to worship Julian Cope.
God I love Julian Cope.

June....goings on.
Morning chaps, it's 9.30 am and I have just been out for the evening with Milk Kan and Black Daniel. I feel fine. I got home at 1am and slept like a log.
It is Glastonbury season and I wasn't there, thats ok too. It must have been so hot there, and apart from the Pet Shop Boys and The Hold Steady, both who I have already seen this year there isn't much I wanted to see. I was going to write my usual , cliche, festival rant. However, I found this
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2010/jun/25/glastonbury-live-friday-grace-dent
This is the best festival rant ever. This woman needs a Knighthood and her own daily TV show. She should be made counsellor to anyone whose head is too far up their own bum.
This month I turned 34. I will be 40 in 6 years, i am happy with my life and pleased in my place. Welcome to the first summer since 2008 with (hopefully) enough cash to do something. Most of my friends seem in a good state too. I like this.
Music wise, well, Angry Bees performed at Guided Missile with special guests Nicky Biscuit of TOANWTS (The Owls Are Not What They Seem, which IMHO is far too long a name for a band) and the amazing Charley Stone of Gay Dad/ New Royal Family and countless other acts. We made a terrible noise. People clapped and then we watched "We Are The Physics." What a band tight, funny melodic and increadibly loud. Nickys Owls (as they will always be refered to from now on in) were brilliant. Damien Pinset, in a band, Marcus Fulcher on the drums, sublime, if a little savage , on the lyric side. Great.
The Hold Steady, I am sorry, may be it is because I haven't heard it that much, but the new stuff isn't all that. This was MORE than made up for by the fact that the old stuff Is amazing. It always will be amazing, they do miss something in their lack of moustaicioed keyboard player, but they gained an extra guitarist. As a show, this did nothing for them, but the new guitarist looks like a direct cross between KTOTP and Ian Wilson. The did wheel out some amazing guitars. On to guitars, everyone please, check out The Heritage Guitar Company, Kalamazoo. This is where the next one is coming from. Back to the Hold Steady, great, would have been better with more older crowd pleasers, I hate to selfishly say that, but it is true.
Black Daniel just keep getting better. I enjoyed my brief spell as a bass player for them but they just don't need one! They look much better as four across the front ranting lunatics. I still managed to join them for the last few songs on BV's. Last night was the best that they have ever sounded.
There were some GOD awful bands playing on the same bill, someone with an acoustic guitar in a band, that is wrong, wrong , wrong, you have drums behind you play an electric f**king guitar, who do you think you are? Jack f**king Johnson? or some other sappy twat loved by Australians. And some Le Faux Roux.....pointless and pants, piss off please.....
I am sure i saw some other bands, this month....but I want to go and get eggs benedict so I must go.
On the my new bands thing....The Wayne, 2 Shoes, Ciaran, and me band have a new keyboarding man in the form of Tom Iceman Beats Collinson. We are back in the studio this week.
Department, the other one, are almost ready to go, first gig is booked, 21st August at 93 Feet East. www.myspace.com/departmenttheband

A superior week in music
Last Sat it was Ollie Ballerinas stag do. The best man was a girl , there were no boobies or strippers and we went to an indie club.
Sheffield is a great place and everyone is lovely there, well those I met were. 2.50 a pint too. Downstairs in the Cazbah was a rock club, where they played the sisters and the cult. Amazing. Ollie and Nick A grade both independently told that they hate the Smiths, I was a little pie eyed but I think the phrase "Like "poor me" sixth form poetry without the wit" made me smile. "Johny Marr, great guitarist, since when has strumming a rickenbaker made you a great guitarist. We went downstairs and danced to Poison by Alice Cooper.
Now, some of you might disagree with what I am about to say, but I am right and you are wrong. Mark Knophler is a genius. Seeing him perform telegraph road at the RAH from 8 feet away was just mind blowing. I have been a fan since I was years old. Since "that" moment from the Nelson Mandela concert. The guy is amazing.
Last night I saw the pixies for the third time at a fan club gig at the Troxy. It was one of the greatest live experiences of my life. They even played river euphrates. It was superb. The sound was the best live sound I have ever heard. First class.
This week I also purchased a ticket to see The Wall on the 11th May 2011. Roger Waters is a total schlong but The Wall is a work of art. Anyone who disagrees with me on this is also wrong.
Great week. I am now 34, 34 is a good age to be!

Subliminal Girls....the return, gently.....
Things happen in funny ways, and when, last week we received an email from Keir Mills to say that Sky One wanted to speak to us about a new music program I expected a mixed reaction from the girls.
I received a unanimous, "Let's go for it". Now as with most of these things, probably nothing will ever come of it, but what it did prove, was that there is a certain chemistry between one of the most obnoxious, most difficult but also most fun bands I have ever been in. The missed chances, the great songs and the volatile, difficulties that go with having a five piece band containing 5 front men.
After arriving on the scene to find that there was a lot more people than we expected at said audition, to feel sceptical, but to go on and play electronic hearts again, for the first time, for 8 months with no rehearsal and for it to feel damn near perfect, except for the bass (Danny still out of action for now).
This was enough to make me feel that we never split up, we took a break, we took something, we needed SOMETHING, what I still don't know. Danny still isn't ready to play and without him we will never ever be subliminal girls proper.
I think the time has come to start putting stuff together again piece by piece, without having any pressure and without trying to be anything. The "last gig" was a last gig because this will be different.
I for one want to make an album.
A bit vague I know.....as we always stole....barbed wire kisses.

A bit vague I know.....as we always stole....barbed wire kisses.

it's been a little while
Morning chaps, a little inactive on the blog front of late, not through lack of music, just through lack of writing about it.
Been a bit of a mixed month but all very good.
Firstly the death of a love affair, we hung up our 18 carrot boots for the last time. Loads of people came, it was great but I went home early with killer flu....Rebekah Delgado , now complete with band, came on before us and was absolutely amazing, word has it there will be news from her recording wise very soon.
The new band featuring Ciaran, Wayne Jimmy and I is sounding great, no idea what to compare it too but somewhere between the lost boys sound track and raw power. We are almost ready to go. Wayne is making me a very competent bass player, much to Jimmy's amusement.
Department, featuring Dan Lobster,Rob, Darren and myself are slightly further away from being ready lyric wise, which I must sort out, but also sounding great, somewhere between Stephen Malkmus, MBV and carter USM. We have about 3 songs finished and ready to go and another 6 or so close. Dans guitar playing is amazing and he is a great friend so this is a venture that I am really enjoying being part of, and do they drink....
I have just started playing bass for Black Daniel. I am really happy about this as they are probably my number 1 live band in the world at the moment. They don't really need a bass player as most of what they do they trigger so I am more of an "occasional live addition" but completely love it. Lots of great gigs coming up ,including secret garden party festival, guided missile, potty mouth disco and many many more. do not have to persuade anyone to like this band. Just google black daniel myspace and have a listen., live dates are up there. Come along , you will not ever be disappointed.
On Thursday some band or other played with llyod Grossman, that band were the angry bees, now with two new secret front people.
llyod Grossman is an even bigger guitar pervert than I am, sporting a mint condition 1969 gibson Les paul deluxe gold top and a 57 Les Paul Junior single cut in TV yellow, both original, his taste in guitars is even harder to fault than his chili tomato pasta sauce.
Thank you to everyone who came it was brilliant.
Also I really enjoyed an evening at Secret Danger Society, my friends Oli, Jon and Ben's monthly night at the Moustache Bar in Stoke Newington High Street, free entry for all and reasonably priced booze. I really enjoyed the music though I don't know the first thing about it so i am not even going to try to describe it.
The rest of the month is looking great, tonight Black Daniel at Fox Fest, Black Daniel at guided missile at the buffalo bar on the 8th, Black daniel on the 14th at the 12 bar with the legendaryly dangerous and sublime Milk Kan, featuring Hood and the Blade.
Apart from being potless due to an unpaid sick day I wasn't expecting all is good.
Love you but don't touch me cos your sick.....

korgs and girls.......
Dear bands,
No more bands of blokes with a girl on a microkorg anymore. It is 2010 now not 2007.
However, I am looking forward to the 5 year party, where we all go back to 2005 at the Windmill on Saturday 27th from 2pm.
It is going to be a bit special.
The bands, in no particular order are, The Fades, Ciccone, Bidgie Reef and The Gas, Video Club, The Indelicates, Oliver Levy, Rock N Roll Idiots, The Falling Overs and Myself. An evening that harps back to the days before I had to write Koko and Mirror and certainly before the idle rich bored us with New Rave and dubstep. The days when bands contained interesting people with new original ideas. and heaven forbid, catchy songs that mean something, or nothing.......
Lets get drunk and dance to the longblondes and helen love. suits me.
Back to 2010.
Angry Bees 31st March at 93 feet east. Take the day off the next day.
Angry Bees 29th April at Buffalo Bar with Lloyd Grossman (yes THE Lloyd Grossman)
Angry Bees 12 June at Buffalo Bar with John Moore Rock and Roll Trio (yes THE John Moore)
Jim Rhesus, Jimmy 2 Shoes and Arran Love Child 3rd April at the black daniel all dayer at the kings head Camden with, Black Daniel, The Coolness, Gob Sausage and more.
I like living in a world where there is a band called gob sausage.
This Friday night, Shot By Both Sides, also at the windmill brixton with HELMHOLTZ RESONATORS......
Another new band, bass playing in French Electric going well, also taken on vocal and guitar duties in department, with dan Lobster and others.....
Saw and amazing band called the homosexulas on Sat eve at a night organised by Dee Sada at cable street studios. I like it there.
I am also addicted to peppermint tea.
Self Obsession is and Art Form.

The last few weeks revolutions and revelations
Black Daniel video recording was amazing fun. Drinking guiness all day with interesting people and waring surgical masks was brilliant.
Rehearsals with the french electric are going very well, we now have 3 finished songs and a 4th on its way.
Angry Bees, we don't talk about. If you are not there you will never know.
Bass playing, I love.
Last 18 Carat Gig 10th April Guided Missile, bring it on bring it on.
New job, great.
Drugs, at 33 2/3 years old, 1/3rd of a revolution too late, I have decided that I am totally 100% bored and sick and tired, of synthetic drugs and everything to do with them. They are all very well at the time, they all do pretty much the same thing on the way up, but they destroy friend ships, alienate people, cause psycosis and almost always denial of psychosis, and eventually cause heart attacks, strokes and slow, painful lonely deaths. Not to mention paranoia and discomfort directly afterwards. Clinging on to something that is always going to be running away from you. After personal experience of most of the above, I ask the question, is it worth it, the answer, no. They are not banned to stop people having fun. I'll just have a pint, cheers.

Rebekah brilliant
It is always nice when you go to see a bunch of friends perform in their relatively new bands and they are all pretty excellent.
I have to take my hat off to Rebekah Delgado, who performed a solo show with a few guests, one being our own Steve Horry, the others also excellent, a special mention to Sara on the Saw.
Rebekah, the songs that she sung were real, honest, saddening and sometimes down right funny. She was totally brilliant. Her lyrical observations on situations kept the entire audience captivated, some wondering (and wishing) that the songs were directed at them, some knowing what she means about certain situations and others, who didn’t empathise, definitely sympathised. It is not often that I see someone perform something that could quite genuinely change their lives. Top marks.
Keith, you know you are brilliant. You get no review.
Nicky, well, I was impressed. The Owls were definitely not what they seemed. They were a darn sight better. Hell those songs are depressing though, but again, honest, real and sometimes so close to the bone that you can feel them making contact. Adele you are not, funny, you definitely are.

Well I never
I had no idea that Doug Yule sang lead on some of my fave Velvet Underground songs, what avoice that man has!
1968–1970
When Lou Reed fired bassist John Cale from The Velvet Underground in 1968, Yule (who had befriended the band in 1967) joined as Cale's replacement. He made his first studio appearance on their third album, The Velvet Underground (1969), playing bass and organ, as well as singing lead vocals on the ballad "Candy Says". Yule's contribution to the LP was considerable, and his vocals would later come in handy on the road. When Reed's voice became strained from touring, Yule would sing lead on several songs. While Cale had been a more experimental bass player, Yule was more technically proficient on the bass than Cale and his distinct melodic style suited Reed's desire to move into a more mainstream direction. On the band's fourth album, Loaded (1970), his role became even more prominent, singing lead vocals on several songs on the LP ("Who Loves The Sun", "New Age", "Lonesome Cowboy Bill", and "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'"), and playing six instruments (including keyboard and drums). Yule's brother, Billy, also joined in on the sessions as a drummer, as Maureen Tucker was pregnant and, therefore, absent for most of the recording

Bill Hicks was right. People have forgotten how to judge. Completely!
Mumford and Sons, if you read the reviews are “A good band.”
May be it is me that has forgotten how to judge, but to me it sounds like a bunch of fiddle de dee foppish bedwetting second rate over serious rubbish, and most of all, they are boring, dull, DULL, DULL , surely no one really cares about this sort of music, and if they do, why in Gods name do they? If you want to listen to “folk” music listen to traditional “folk” music produced by “folk” not “Faux” lk music or Fauxlk if you will, they are like a band of James Blunts, and not the side of James Blunt that is the comedy posh twat who was quite funny once on top gear, the side of James Blunt that had thick people singing “Your Beautiful” at each other everywhere you went before bursting into a chorus of “The way to Amarillo”. Am I right?

Now that really is amazing and exciting.

Death of a love affair....
Last night heralded the death of a love affair, the 18 Carat Love Affair to be precise. The key to music is to form a band. Play some great gigs and some great songs to lots of people, to get played on the radio. To be loved by everyone you play too and love it yourself. At the point where any one of these things isn’t happening, take a cutlass and slice it to pieces and make sure that every one of those pieces is too good to play the Half Moon in Putney on a Monday night.
We will play one last gig, it will be fun, lots of fun. Never no fun with the 18 Carat Wreck Affair.

All "safe" bets are off.
Three strategies;
The “safe bet” has been the strategy of many a record company for the last few years.
Strategy one “People like The Editors and bought their records. So, all we need to do is find a band that sound a bit like them and through a tonne of cash at them. Do this enough times, throw enough sh*t at the wall and some of it will stick.
The second strategy, “This band are from Shoreditch/ New Cross, Shoreditch/New Cross is cool, lets give them a little money, not a lot, not enough, and get some photos of them into a classy twatty style magazine looking moody with some good hair.” A conversation Emily and I had with Stephen Malkmus, (see the name drop there, 10 million indie points) on the subject led him to say that this approach gives us two good songs and thousands of great photographs. I think two good songs is a bit of an exaggeration on his part. I can’t think of one.
Strategy three, pluck them straight out of BRIT school, give them a fake “cutsie cockerney” voice, dress them up in vintage and lie about their age, this has been the most successful strategy of the last few years and my god has is produced some dross.
None of these strategies will land us with a band that anyone actually will really ever care about for any length of time, the record companies, many of which are now in dire straits (they wouldn’t be if they had a Dire Straits) have failed to provide good new music to the people.

Bands to look out for in 2010
Most bands are absolutely rubbish. They are serious, pretentious and not at all entertaining. These bands are enjoyed by people who are serious , pretentious and not at all entertaining.
Other bands are bandwagonesque, see almost every band that take influence from the liberstrokesdivisionorder. You are boring, go home, thank you, well not thank you, but good night. Don't get me wrong, I like Joy Division, I even have to admit that I quite like the libertines but as Eddie Argos wisely said, and many people missunderstood, "I can't stand the sound of the velvet underground, the SECOND time around". Now this is the 5th time around.
This is only my opinion, but it is the right one.
There are however , a few bands that aren't like this. At the moment, the best of these are Helmholtz Resonators, Black Daniel and White Witches.

The birth of the french electric
As some of you are aware, I was once in a band called Rhesus with Wayne Owens. Wayne and I have just formed a new band with Jimmy 2 Shoes on vox, Ciaran Mcnamee on Drums, Wayne on Guitar and keys and me on bass.
We have around 4 finished songs. So far so good. It woudl all fit nicely on the lost boys soundtrack. Some of it would sound ok on Raw Power.
I like playing the bass. I will be doing this a lot more, I intend to become the Arran Goodchild of bass players.

Noise Band Terrified Intoxicated Starry Eyed and Bollock Naked
Earlier in the week Steve Horry, Ciaran Mcnamee and myself formed a 3 piece noise band called the angry bees.
With in 20 mins we have two gigs confirmed.
The idea was born when I borrowed Liam Black Daniels distortion pedal last Sat night and accidently turned it up to 11. When I switched it on 60 japanese people shit with excitement.
I thought if we form a band where we all just do that for 30 mins without stopping we will be huge in Japan. I like japanese food and beer. Job done.
